About "Ship Builders"
(1 Nephi 17:9)

While living in Kaysville, Utah, I was asked to teach a Relief Society lesson on service, but all that was coming to my mind was a table full of tools... carpenter tools.  I thought, "what do tools have to do with service?" I called a friend of mine (Julie Wall) and shared with her my dilemma. She was saying how important love was in building family relationships. Then I knew... the spirit bore witness to me of the concept that just as Nephi was commanded to build a ship, so are we: Relationships (friendships, partnerships, companionships) and Stewardships (discipleships /  apostleship) to name a few.  I began writing my thoughts down and thought the song was finished.

Years later, Pres. Hinckley came out with his book, "Way to Be" in which he stressed the need to "Be Involved." I knew that was a perfect addition to the concept of building relationships. "Ship Builders" was completed with this addition in November of 2002.

Lyrics to "SHIP BUILDERS"

Intro:  Nephi was commanded by the Lord to build a ship.
A monumental process to precede his family's trip.
The ship would need to be complete before it left the shore,
so Nephi asked the question, "Lord, where shall I find ore?"

1. He began the process right then, seeking for the ore.
For he knew ore was but a tool in it's "potential" form.
Then the refiner's fire could make the ore into a tool
To use for many purposes when we follow rules.

CHORUS:
Get involved and make a difference and a sacred vigil keep.
Build a ship that's strong and sturdy, for life's waters can be deep.
Get involved and make a difference, don't just follow what is "hip"
Get involved and make a difference it takes work to build a ship.

2. Likening scriptures to ourselves we'll find we've ships to build.
Relationships for growing and our stewardships to fill.
    Each "ship" builds on the other, friendships gained left in it's wake;
while partnerships, companionships, learn to give and take.

CHORUS:
Get involved and make a difference and a sacred vigil keep.
Build a ship that's strong and sturdy, for life's waters can be deep.
Get involved and make a difference, don't just follow what is "hip"
Get involved and make a difference it takes work to build a ship.

3. We all have potential, yes, we all have "ore" to mine.
But our tools that we're needing are the "qualities refined."
The "ships" that we are building now should last our whole lives through
and sail our families and ourselves cross deep water, too!

CHORUS:
Get involved and make a difference and a sacred vigil keep.
Build a ship that's strong and sturdy, for life's waters can be deep.
Get involved and make a difference, don't just follow what is "hip"
Get involved and make a difference it takes work to build a ship.
Our involvement makes a difference, we have work, let's build our ship.
