About "Return with Honor"
(Doc & Cov 84:88)
In March of 1998, I was approached by a dear friend (Claudia Evans) who wanted me to speak with her friend. This friend had a missionary daughter who had had a miracle take place. While serving in South America, she and her companion were crossing a field, unaware they had entered a cross-fire. Bullets between enemies who were fighting were hurling all around them. They continued to cross the field, unharmed, unsure if the gunmen didn't see them, or if they had just been protected by angels. Either way, they knew it was a miracle and shared it with their families.
When I was asked to write this song, they shared the scripture that their daughter had shared with them:
"And whoso receiveth you, there I will be also, for I will
go before your face. I will be on your right hand and
on your left, and my Spirit shall be in your hearts, and
mine angels round about you, to bear you up."
(Doc & Cov 84:88)
Missionaries are often counseled to "Return with Honor" so I thought the scripture and the counsel would go beautifully together in this song. "Return with Honor" was written March 15, 1998.
Lyrics to "RETURN WITH HONOR"
1. I left my home in heaven for a chance to grow on earth.
I slipped into mortality through a process known as birth.
Before I left my Father, I heard these words so clear.
He pulled me in His arms and said to me, as He drew me near:
CHORUS: "Return with honor! My Spirit shall be in your heart and mine angels round about you to bear you up; so
Return with honor! Let your light so shine! You are my child divine."
2. He sent me to a family and I learned the Gospel truths.
I yearned to share them with the world in everything I do.
I think about my Father, and my Savior, too,
and then the Holy Spirit whispers these simple words so true.
3. My life has been of service, of love for all mankind.
I've tried to heed their counsel with heart, soul, might and mind.
Return with honor! His Spirit shall be in your heart and His angels round about you to bear you up; so
Return with honor! Let His light so shine! You are His child divine! With honor we will shine!
